2005 Forum
- "Where do we go from here?"
On Saturday,
March 26, 2005, over 100 of our friends and neighbors sat down together
at Wright State University to ponder the
question: "Where Do We Go From Here?
Brought
together for the second annual Community Economic Forum, participants
devoted a full day of their weekend to help prepare for the future.
Forum 2005
started at 8:20 AM with a summary of last year's Forum and the related
activities since then.
The group
then broke up into six workshops devoted to Economic Planning,
Housing, Education, Taxes and Revenues, Government Services and Smart
Planning. With about 18 attendees in each workshop led by facilitators
from the Center for Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA) of Wright State
University, discussion was lively and productive. With the help of
resource experts furnished by CUPA, each workshop produced a summary
of ideas and action statements for later discussion by the entire
forum.
As attendees
gathered for box lunches, several were heard to comment on how fast
the morning had gone by. Refreshed and renewed, everyone re-gathered
in the main room to hear summaries presented by volunteers from each
workshop session.
Detailed
reports of the workshops, as well, as the plenary sessions, are
available for viewing by clicking on 2005 Forum Workshops in the Table
of Contents.
The major
underlying theme of the Forum was the struggle to balance private property rights
with the deep desire on the part of residents to preserve the values
they see in our community.
Forum 2005
ended with a panel discussion among several local elected officials
about how to implement Forum ideas, followed by the election of
representatives for the Community Round Table, the group
charged with the responsibility to support and communicate Forum
initiatives for the next year.
Participants elected
Jerry Gasho, Len Kramer, Dave Heckler
and Megan Quinn as new members, joining existing members, Tony
Armocida, Tony Arnett, Mark Crockett, Richard Lapedes, Sharen Neuhardt,
Bruce Rickenbach, Mary Kay Smith and Karen Wintrow. Ven Adkins was
later named as The Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce's
representative to the CRT. The CRT chooses its leadership during their first meeting.
Community members may contact the CRT directly through this website or
through these representatives personally.
A complete
list of the Forum 2005 participants, comprised of both invited members
and volunteers from the community can be found in the "Who's Who"
section of this website.
Photos of the
conference and attendees are posted and may be viewed in the "Photo
Gallery" section as well.
The Forum
2005 sponsors, The Yellow Springs Men's Group, The Yellow Springs
