Educational Challenges:
- Education village
- Build upon historical tradition of the village as a place that
values education
- Educational Enrollment
- Attract people to Yellow Springs who have or will have children
- Maintain/improve academic and educational program quality
Challenge #1: Education Village
The Education Village concept is multidimensional with Antioch
College playing an important role both historically and currently in
the evolution of the concept. The Business and Education park is
central to the Education Village concept and makes the concept a
visible anchor of the community. The Education Alliance
connects and strengthens the many educational assets of the community.
The following list addresses concerns/challenges confronting Antioch
College, the Business and Education Park, and the Education Alliance.
- Antioch College is an important element in the perception of an
education village
- Opportunity exists to enhance 3-way communication and
partnerships that benefit Yellow Springs and Antioch College
- How does Antioch engage community in dialogue before taking
action?
- Positive steps have been taken to establish a business and
education park
- Opportunity exists for Education Alliance to
continue to address related issues
- The Education Village concept is alive and well for residents of
Yellow Springs and
- Of the 16 participants in this focus group, 12 (75%) chose to
live in Yellow Springs due to the existing perception that this
community highly values education; eight participants (50%)
chose to live in YS as a result of Antioch College being located
in the community; and 13 participants remain in YS primarily due
to the quality of the schools
- If Antioch could build and add faculty, this would increase
Yellow Springs’ population but trend looks like it will continue
to decline, as will student population at Antioch
- Community should want to support the College, but has little
control over their enrollment
- Arts/Culture opportunity with Antioch/ Community/K-12 schooling
- Plays, documentary films
- Build larger theater
- Creating works there
- Writing, Painting partnerships
- Opportunity with science partnerships also
- Focus has been on McGregor but Antioch College requires
increased focus
- K-12 benefits from volunteers from Antioch College
- Should promote educating mind, soul and body in Yellow Springs
Challenge #2: Educational Enrollment
- Improve business and housing opportunities
- Promote holistic education that already exists
- Promote whole range of education programs (Antioch School,
YSCCC)
- Promote the high quality of Yellow Springs’ schools
- Promote arts in our community (Theater, Visual Arts, Writing,
Galleries)
- Utilize existing web sites
- Promote sciences
- Are academic achievement test scores more a reflection of family
environment or quality of education in K-12?
- Opportunity to make K-12 more exciting
- Performing arts and arts education are valued in Yellow Springs
K-12
- Center for Business and Education could be utilized/promoted
to take advantage of high school kids taking college courses/credits
at Antioch College
- Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce website should promote the
"Education Village"
- Need more/new business to retain college grads
- Lower cost and higher density housing is needed
- Could build modular homes
- Could build starter homes
- Could build cottage homes with common green space
- Could promote educating mind, body and soul in Yellow Springs
- School district webpage’s should promote all positives
- Small class size, etc.
- Balanced curriculum
- Diversity
- Need coordinated efforts to promote "the best kept
secret" in education

All aspects and options for youth education in Yellow Springs
should be identified and promoted
Challenge #3: Maintain/improve academic and educational program
quality
- Maintain quality, support for schools
- Continue/increase use of volunteers to enhance program
- Focus on curriculum that supports but is not limited by
proficiency tests
Note: Schools’ development of standards that reflect Yellow
Springs’ community values as well as proficiency test
- Balance between extracurricular activities and academics
- Opportunities for all to participate
- Student projects benefit schools and community
- Education quality is okay to maintain population and other taxes
to support education
