Challenge #1: Education Village

The Education Village concept is multidimensional with Antioch College playing an important role both historically and currently in the evolution of the concept. The Business and Education park is central to the Education Village concept and makes the concept a visible anchor of the community. The Education Alliance connects and strengthens the many educational assets of the community. The following list addresses concerns/challenges confronting Antioch College, the Business and Education Park, and the Education Alliance.

  1. Antioch College is an important element in the perception of an education village
  • Opportunity exists to enhance 3-way communication and partnerships that benefit Yellow Springs and Antioch College

  • How does Antioch engage community in dialogue before taking action?

  • Of the 16 participants in this focus group, 12 (75%) chose to live in Yellow Springs due to the existing perception that this community highly values education; eight participants (50%) chose to live in YS as a result of Antioch College being located in the community; and 13 participants remain in YS primarily due to the quality of the schools
  1. If Antioch could build and add faculty, this would increase Yellow Springs’ population but trend looks like it will continue to decline, as will student population at Antioch

  2. Community should want to support the College, but has little control over their enrollment

  3. Arts/Culture opportunity with Antioch/ Community/K-12 schooling
  • Plays, documentary films
  • Build larger theater
  • Creating works there
  • Writing, Painting partnerships
  • Opportunity with science partnerships also
  1. Focus has been on McGregor but Antioch College requires increased focus

  2. K-12 benefits from volunteers from Antioch College

  3. Should promote educating mind, soul and body in Yellow Springs

  2. Promote holistic education that already exists

  3. Promote whole range of education programs (Antioch School, YSCCC)

  5. Promote arts in our community (Theater, Visual Arts, Writing, Galleries)

  6. Utilize existing web sites

  7. Promote sciences
  1. Are academic achievement test scores more a reflection of family environment or quality of education in K-12?
  • Opportunity to make K-12 more exciting
  1. Performing arts and arts education are valued in Yellow Springs K-12

  2. Center for Business and Education could be utilized/promoted to take advantage of high school kids taking college courses/credits at Antioch College

  3. Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce website should promote the "Education Village"

  4. Need more/new business to retain college grads

  5. Lower cost and higher density housing is needed
  • Could build modular homes
  • Could build starter homes
  • Could build cottage homes with common green space
  1. Could promote educating mind, body and soul in Yellow Springs

  2. School district webpage’s should promote all positives
  • Small class size, etc.
  • Balanced curriculum
  • Diversity
  1. Need coordinated efforts to promote "the best kept secret" in education
  • All aspects and options for youth education in Yellow Springs should be identified and promoted

    • Ex: Antioch School

Challenge #3:  Maintain/improve academic and educational program quality

  1. Maintain quality, support for schools

  2. Continue/increase use of volunteers to enhance program

  3. Focus on curriculum that supports but is not limited by proficiency tests

Note: Schools’ development of standards that reflect Yellow Springs’ community values as well as proficiency test
