LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE LAUNCHES PROGRAM

The Yellow Springs Leadership Institute got off to a good start Saturday, Sept. 14, as 10 participants attended an all-day intensive session at the Antioch University McGregor Conference Center.

Fay Ellis Jones of Antioch McGregor, who helped facilitate the session, said, "It was a long day and everyone was tired. but left feeling upbeat."  Lead facilitators were Christine Cugliari of Coshocton, who headed a similar program there, and Garee Earnest, from the Ohio State University Leadership Center.

The program began with this full-day orientation session in which the participants explored core concepts of community leadership and the qualities of leaders that make them effective. The initial session also included self-awareness and self-assessment activities designed to help participants relate their personal perspectives and interests to effective  group interaction.

They will meet again every two weeks 1 in 18 sessions covering various aspects of I effective leadership. Each session will be led by a professional in the field covered. Local resident Fred Bartenstein will lead the next session.

The program, whose objective is to prepare community members for Leadership in local civic organizations, is under the guidance of a community board of trustees. It had its organizational meeting early in August and will meet again on l11ursday. Oct. 24, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Yellow Springs Library meeting room. Its meetings are open and anyone interested may attend.

The curriculum for the institute was put together by a committee including Fay Ellis Jones, Sue Abendroth and Sally Mier. The project grew out of an ad hoc study group chaired by Jim Albright, which started meeting in June 2001.

The program will be repeated next year. For more information or to express interest in  next year's program, contact Jim Albright, 767-2047, or e-mail jim.albright@v-space.org.

LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE APPOINTS BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND INVITES PARTICIPATION BY COMMUNITY MEMBERS

The newly formed non-profit organization has announced appointment of a Board of Trustees to oversee the organization and its first offering called Leadership Yellow Springs, a program to foster leadership in the community and its organizations.

Trustees named to the Board so far are: James Albright, William Alexander, Jocelyn Hardman, James A. McKee, Sally Mier, Bruce Rickenbach, and Saul Young, The full board will have nine members and two more are expected to be chosen before their first meeting in July. Members were invited to participate based upon their interest and experience with community leadership, education and their interest in the program. Board terms will be staggered at first but subsequent members will serve 3 year terms and may be reelected. Although much of the work will be done by a program coordinator and operational committees, the Board will oversee the operation of the Institute and its programs and will be the ultimate entity for policy and management of the organization.

The goal of The Leadership Institute is to promote community welfare by increasing the involvement of all its citizens in the entire community, and by helping develop good leaders for its charitable, civic, cultural, economic, educational, religious, public service, and social organizations.

Enrollment of participants in the program, which will begin in September, will be opened in June. Participation is open to everyone in the greater Yellow Springs community from high school seniors to senior citizens. A maximum of 15 people will be selected for the program. A conscious effort will be made to select a group with a balance of ages, ethnic background, gender, occupation and interests. Anyone not selected for a particular session will be given first consideration in the next session. Criteria for eligibility include a commitment to participation in community or public service or civic affairs, an interest in one or more community organizations and a commitment to developing personal leadership skills. Although the program will have substantial costs to implement, the fees charged to participants will be nominal to assure accessibility to anyone wanting to participate.

Jim Albright, Chair of the Planning Committee, also wishes to invite anyone who has an interest in the Institute objectives to join the Trustees and planners by volunteering to help with the multiple committee assignments and mentoring opportunities involved in mounting this program. Volunteers are invited to discuss their interest with any of the Board members or by contacting him for further information. His telephone is 767-2156/2047; e-mail address is jim.albright@v-space.org.

THE LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE OF YELLOW SPRINGS IS FORMED TO PROVIDE LEADERSHIP EDUCATION

A newly formed non-profit organization, announces Leadership Yellow Springs, a training program for members of the community and its organizations.

Most communities, continually face a growing variety of challenges – cultural, educational, political, social, civic and economic. Effective leadership is essential to providing effective solutions to these challenges. We are a diverse community, celebrate that diversity and want to preserve it. However, this diversity creates special challenges to our leaders – it is simply much easier to lead a group who are of essentially one mind than it is to lead a group of widely different viewpoints, life experience and objectives.

In addition, the difficulty of finding effective leaders is greater for a small community, such as Yellow Springs/Miami Township, than for larger communities, because we face many of the same basic problems, but we have a disproportionately smaller pool of resources to call upon to help provide solutions to those problems.

An ad hoc group of citizens is launching a program to address this situation by fostering leadership in the greater Yellow Springs community. Spurred by a shrinking pool of volunteers to lead civic, social, service and other organizations here, The Yellow Springs Leadership Institute has been formed to offer encouragement and training through a program called Leadership Yellow Springs.

Participation will be open and available to everyone in the village area community. The first session will begin in September and will end in May. Participants will meet regularly for a carefully planned curriculum of group and individual experiences designed to provide the broadest background in community organizations. Information and interactive practice will be provided, for example about, leadership skills, organizational development, fiscal and budgetary practices, conflict resolution and consensus building to name a few.

The goal of The Leadership Institute is to promote community welfare by increasing the involvement of all its citizens in the entire community, and by developing for its charitable, civic, cultural, economic, educational, religious, public service, and social organizations good leaders who:

The program will accept participants from all walks of the community. Because the program will be financed primarily by sponsors only a modest fee will be paid by participants, thus assuring widespread availability to interested individuals. Planners expect from 8 to 12 enrollees for the first session this fall, according to Chair, Jim Albright. Interested prospective participants and potential sponsors are invited to contact Jim for further information. His telephone is 767-2156/2047; e-mail address is jim.albright@v-space.org.
